Nissan 180SX: what to check before you buy one in Japan

Sources checked 2 October 2026

I owned a 180SX. In my experience, it's hard to find one in Japan that hasn't been crashed at some point. These are the places I'd check first, and none of them are what a dealer's listing photos are taken to show.

Where I'd look on a 180SX

The rear arches and quarters (rear fenders)

There are plenty of places where a 180SX rusts, but the area around the rear arches and the rear quarters is the one to look at carefully.

The jacking points

Look carefully at the jacking points.

Around the spare wheel

Check the area around the spare wheel.

Cracks by the front strut towers

In my experience, the body on a 180SX can crack around the front strut towers, near the front wings. That's a crack in the body itself. Once it's cracked, it's a nuisance, so I'd buy one that isn't cracked there.

Standard or heavily modified

A lot of 180SXs were drift cars at some point. So in my view, a decent one is likely to be a fully standard car. Or, possibly, an extremely modified one may turn out to be in better condition.

For what a very low or braced and welded car can hide underneath, see lowered and modified cars.

What photos can't tell you

A listing photo of a 180SX shows the paint and the wheels. It doesn't show the inside of the rear quarters, the jacking points from below, the spare wheel well, or a crack near a strut tower unless someone was looking for it. And a photo shows the surface, not how far rust goes or how a crash was repaired. See what dealer photos miss and rust on the body or a part.

We don't lift the car, so we look underneath from ground level and mark anything we can't see as Not verified in the report. We don't certify accident or repair history, and we don't tell you whether to buy.

Found a 180SX in Japan you're serious about? Send us the listing and tell us which of these places worry you. We'll look at as much of each as can be seen without lifting the car or removing anything, and tell you what we couldn't see.

Photos to ask the dealer for

If you can't get someone to the car, ask the dealer for close photos of the same places:

  1. Both rear arches and the rear quarters
  2. Each jacking point
  3. The area around the spare wheel, with the boot (trunk) mat lifted
  4. The body around both front strut towers, near the front wings

A Remote Check is where we phone the dealer in Japanese and ask for these for you. We mainly cover the Tokai region (Aichi, Gifu and Mie) for viewings in person; for a car elsewhere in Japan, ask us and we'll quote the travel before you pay.
