Honda Civic Type R EK9: what to check before you buy one in Japan
Sources checked 3 October 2026
The EK9 hasn't had quite as hard a life as the EG6, in my view. Three things are worth knowing before you choose one in Japan: the crash history, what's been done in the engine bay, and rust.
What I'd tell you about the EK9
The crash history
Not as bad as the EG6, but in my view a crashed EK9 may have been in a big accident.
Engine bay changes are fine. A turbo isn't
A modified engine bay is fine. But I'd stay away from cars where someone has done something odd, like fitting a turbo. It ruins what's good about the B16B.
For what can and can't be seen in an engine bay, see the engine bay.
Hondas rust
In my view this goes for Hondas in general: they rust. The EK9 is no exception.
The DC2 Integra Type R is the same, in my view: a crashed one may have been in a big accident too.
What we can't tell you
- How a crash was repaired. A repair can be hard to see. We photograph the signs we can see, and we don't certify accident or repair history. For what a Japanese listing's "repair history" line covers, see repair history and flood cars.
- How the engine runs. We don't test drive or test the engine. The dealer's staff start it. See engine start videos.
- How far rust goes. A photo shows the surface. See rust on the body or a part.
We look from ground level, mark anything we can't see as Not verified in the report, and don't tell you whether to buy.
Looking at an EK9 in Japan? Send us the listing, and tell us whether it's the crash history, the engine bay or the rust that worries you.
Questions to ask the dealer
- What does the repair history say, and is there any record of bodywork?
- What's been changed in the engine bay? Ask for a written list, and whether the engine itself has been modified.
- Photos of the places that rust: see what dealer photos miss for where to start.
- Photos of the front seats, including the side bolsters: see checking the interior for what wear to look for.
A Remote Check is where we put these questions to the dealer in Japanese for you. We mainly cover the Tokai region (Aichi, Gifu and Mie) for viewings in person; for a car elsewhere in Japan, ask us and we'll quote the travel before you pay.
