Honda Civic Type R EP3: what to know before you buy one in Japan
Sources checked 2 October 2026
I owned an EP3, and it's a pretty good car. Overall, there's not much to complain about. It looks a bit like a boiled egg, but the engine is fast.
What I'd tell you about the EP3
Buy one with the Mugen parts already on it
If you want Mugen parts on an EP3, collecting them afterwards is expensive and a hassle, and in my experience they hardly ever come up for sale. I think you're better off importing a car that already has them fitted.
Mine didn't go straight like an EK9
I found the straight-line stability poor, which I put down to the suspension layout. Next to an EK9, mine wandered enough to make me miserable. The engine, though, is fast.
What photos can't tell you
Two things on this car don't come through properly in a listing photo.
- Whether the Mugen parts are what the listing says they are. A photo shows that a part is fitted. We don't judge whether parts are genuine, and we can't tell you that from a photo either. What we can do is photograph each part close up, so you can decide.
- How it drives. Straight-line stability is something you feel on the road. We don't test drive the car, so this is something no viewing report from us will cover.
For the rest of the car, the same places matter as on any car; see what dealer photos miss and rust on the body or a part. We don't lift the car, so anything we can't see from ground level is marked Not verified in the report, and we don't tell you whether to buy.
Found an EP3 in Japan with the parts you want? Send us the listing, and tell us which parts you'd like photographed.
If the car is a long way from us
We mainly cover the Tokai region (Aichi, Gifu and Mie) for viewings in person; for a car elsewhere in Japan, ask us and we'll quote the travel before you pay. A Remote Check is where we phone the dealer in Japanese, ask your questions and request the photos you're missing.
