Honda Civic EG6: what to know before you buy one in Japan

Sources checked 2 October 2026

I owned an EG6, and I'll be straight with you: most EG6s have had a very hard life. Plenty of them were thrashed by the kanjo street racers or on track, and in my experience nearly all of them have been crashed. A genuinely good EG6 is very rare, in my experience.

What I'd expect

Mine was no exception. It was stripped out: one seat, no interior at all, a roll cage fitted and a limited-slip differential. I've honestly never driven one in good condition.

If the car you're looking at has been lowered, braced or welded, lowered and modified cars covers what that can hide underneath.

Two ways to buy one

  1. Keep looking for a good one. They're out there, but there aren't many. Good luck, and take your time.
  2. Buy one to restore. My suggestion: pick a car with lots of Mugen parts already fitted and plan to restore it from the start. Because it looks great.

What photos can't tell you

On a car with this kind of history, a listing photo tells you very little. It shows the paint and the parts that are fitted. It doesn't show how the car was repaired after a crash, or how far rust has gone under the paint. See what dealer photos miss and rust on the body or a part for where to look on any car.

We don't lift the car, so we look underneath from ground level and mark anything we can't see as Not verified in the report. We don't certify accident or repair history, we don't judge whether parts are genuine, and we don't tell you whether to buy.

If the car is a long way from us

We mainly cover the Tokai region (Aichi, Gifu and Mie) for viewings in person; for a car elsewhere in Japan, ask us and we'll quote the travel before you pay. A Remote Check is where we phone the dealer in Japanese, ask your questions and request the photos you're missing.
