The car you see across this site is mine: a Toyota Prius α (Prius Alpha). If you're thinking of importing one, here's what it's been like as a car bought in Japan. It's one car, so take it as one example, not a rule for every Prius α.
How I bought it
I bought it on Yahoo! JAPAN Auctions. I drive a lot for work and expected to wear it out, so I went for a cheap one.
What I changed after buying it
Only three things: the power steering bushes, the track rod ends (tie rod ends) and the intermediate steering shaft. Nothing else.
If you're looking at a Prius α in Japan, it's worth asking the dealer whether any of these have been replaced.
Where it's rusty
My car comes from Hokuriku, a snowy region of Japan, and it has a lot of rust. The rust at the top of the front suspension is on the strut itself, not on the body it's mounted to. That difference is explained, with the photo, on rust on the body or a part.
What its recall check showed
When we ran it through Toyota's recall search, three recalls came back marked as done, plus one service campaign with an asterisk rather than a status. What those mean, and how to run the same check on a car you're looking at, is on Japanese car recall check by chassis number.
What we can't tell you
- How a particular Prius α has been treated. Mine was bought cheap to be worked hard. Another one may have had an easy life, or a harder one.
- The hybrid system. We don't connect diagnostic equipment or test drive the car, so a viewing from us says nothing about how the hybrid system is working.
- How far rust goes. A photo shows the surface. We look from ground level, and anything we can't see is marked Not verified in the report.
We don't tell you whether to buy.

Questions to ask the dealer
- Have the power steering bushes, the track rod ends or the intermediate shaft been replaced?
- Photos of the strut tops with the bonnet (hood) open, and of the sills from ground level
- The recall status, or the chassis number so you can run the check yourself

If the car is outside the Tokai region (Aichi, Gifu and Mie), a Remote Check is where we phone the dealer in Japanese and ask those three questions before anyone travels.
